This can often be confusing for a new user, what is the difference between writing a post on WordPress or using a page? I’ll outline it below:
Posts are articles you want to appear in your blog and RSS feed on the website, these are typically dated content that appears in chronological order on the website and automatically pull into a feed.
Pages are for static content you don’t want appear in a feed, an example of this would be an About or Contact page on your website. Items you want information for but do not want them to appear in your main feed.
Writing a post in WordPress:
To add a new posts you will hover over Posts in the dashboard and click on Add New to begin writing.
Visual Tab: This is how your post will display visually on the blog
Text Tab: This is how your post looks in HTML format
Typically you always write in the Visual Tab mode, the text tab is for viewing the post in HTML format and not often needed unless you want to add or remove a specific line of code that has been inserted.
This is the top area of the post screen that gives you different options for adding links, aligning your text, changing text size, changing text color, and much more. You can hover over each item to see a small pop out outlining what it does. I recommend playing with this and testing out different elements when writing your first post so you become familiar with all that it offers.
Drafting and publishing a post:
When you’re ready to publish your post you can click at the top right corner to publish it live now or save it as a draft for later.
Scheduling a post:
Do you want to write your post up but you’re not ready for it to go live just yet? You can either draft the post which saves it until you’re ready or schedule it for a particular day and time. Simple click “edit” in the Publish box on the right hand side and enter the date and time. (Note: WordPress works on military time so make sure to enter it correctly)
Setting a Featured image:
I recommend setting a featured image for each post you write, this tells your homepage, social networks, and more what photo to pull when displaying an excerpt or snippet of your post. You can do so by clicking on “set featured image” on the right hand side of the screen.
